Real-Life American Heroes Series: Nurses represent the largest group of health workers in the world, providing primary health care services in many setting other than just the hospital, including schools, factories, community shelters and clinics. Founded in 1899, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) is comprised of over 100 member organizations - each one an autonomous national nursing association - representing most of the world's major countries. The council also works in underdeveloped countries to assist in the implementation of proper health care practices. As defined by the ICN, the field of nursing has four primary missions: to promote health, prevent illness, restore health and alleviate suffering. In addition, the most fundamental creed of nursing is "respect for life, dignity and the rights of man...unrestricted by considerations of nationality, race, creed, colour, age, sex, politics or social status." In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, countless nurses from the New York City and Washington, D.C. areas - as well as from all around the country - immediately came to the nation's aid, providing invaluable care and comfort to thousands of injured and shell-shocked citizens during America's most painful hour. In the selfless tradition of the generations of nurses who salved mankind's wound throughout history, these dedicated men and women worked for untold hours without rest or complaint, providing essential support to the rescue effort and helping America to bear the unbearable. Today, more than ever, the nurse's mission of mercy to help all those in need, without regard for differences of race or religion, serves as an important and powerful example of compassion and tolerance to all humanity.
