THE MITRE TAVERN in Ely Place, is one of the oldest
hostelries in London.
The Mitre (on front of House) dates back to 1546, and
one of the principal points of interest to be seen within
this very ancient Inn, is the trunk of an old Cherry Tree
protected by glass, and which still forms a support of the
building.
The subterranean passage in the cellars, which is
bricked up, was in the old days used by the Fathers of the
Chapel of the Bishop of Ely, when requiring refreshment
