Additional Details:
The raw sugar produced by Cuba totals five million tons per year; but provides the sustenance of a very small part of the natives. The low price of sugar paid by refiners leaves no margin for the planter who scarcely covers his expenses and the cane cutter who made a good living in the past, is now satisfying his hunger with sugar cane and coffee, earning a few cents daily, sometimes one dollar. Naturally, this hand work is imported. Wall street absorbers should be sent here to cut cane.
