Framed through the iron gates of Jackson
Square, the Cabildo is one of the most fa.
mous places in the New Orleans French Quar-
ter. Erected in 1795, it has had an important
part in Louisiana history and culture ever
since.
Seat of the Spanish Government in Louisi-
ana, it was the scene of the transfer of
Louisiana from Spain to France and from
France to the United States in 1803.
Today it is the Louisiana State Museum
and its vast halls are filled with curious
relics of the State's past, as well as implor-
tant paintings and documents connected with
its history.
