Framed through the iron gates of Jackson Square, the Cabildo is one of the most famous places in the New Orleans French Quarter. Erected in 1795, it has had an important part in Louisiana history and culture ever since. Seat of the Spanish government in Louisiana, it was the scene of the transfer of Louisiana from Spain to France and from France to the United States in 1803. Today it is the Louisiana State Museum and its vast halls are filled with curious relics of the state's past, as well as important paintings and documents connected with its history.
