THE ROYAL EXCHANGE.-The third build-
ing of the kind on the same spot. The first.
built by Sir Thos. Gresham was burnt in 1666,
the second in 1838. The stone pavement inside
dates from the first Exchange. There is a Corinthian
portico and a wide flight of steps from which Royal
Proclamations are made, while above are the words
The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof.
