Fort Wilkins Following the Treaty between the federal government – and the Chippewa Indians in early 1843 the Keweenaw Peninsula was opened to settlement and location for mining rights. An Immediate rush of prospectors and adventurers of all types followed. To maintain order fort Wilkins was built in 1844 and occupied by two companies of the fifth U.S. infantry under Captain Clery. But those early Pioneers were a hardy lot and settlers. The soldiers were not called on. The fort was deserted in 1855, was again occupied by federal troops after the civil war and finally abandoned in 1870. Fort Wilkins became a state park in 1923
