Thomas Moran is one of our greatest scenic
artists and his most notable achievements are
American subjects. Two of his masterpieces are
hung in the National Capitol at Washington.
"Long before Noah fell adrift in the ark or
Adam was, forests were growing in Arizona just
as in some parts they grow today, and it befell
that in the course of time they lay prostrate and
over them swept the waters of an inland sea. Eons
passed and the sands buried them deep; then the
sea vanished and when these ancient logs were
uncovered to the sight of a world that had forgotten
them, the sybaritic chemistry of nature had trans-
formed every one of them into chalcedony, topaz,
carnelian, agate and amethyst."
