Society was organized in 1799, its membership
being confined to "any persons who shall have
navigated the seas near the Cape of Good Hope
or Cape Horn." East India Marine Hall Build-
ing was erected in 1824 and dedicated Oct. 14,
1825. John Quincy Adams, then President of
the United States, delivered the opening ad-
dress. In 1867 George
867 George Peabody donated
$140,000 to purchase and refit East India
Marine Hall. Under the name of the Peabody
Academy of Science it was incorporated in 1868.
