Walls 21 feet high, with moat and
outworks. Bastions on the corners, heavy casemates, dungeons
and subterranean passages. Finished 1756, a curious relic of
the Spanish occupancy of Florida. Built of coquina from
Anastasia Island, a substance of shelly conglomerate of coral
origin, easily quarried but becomes of extreme hardness on
long exposure to the air.
