Looking east over the ruins after the fire on the morning of October 17, 1908, in which two lives were lost and $65,000 worth of property destroyed. The fire started in either the Shirley National Bank building, or in the restaurant adjoining. Discovered at 3 a.m., and before the flames were controlled it destroyed everything in its path, including three blocks of the business district. |
