150 CORONADO AT TIGUEX, In 1540
Scene near BERNALILLO, N. M.
In the fall of 1540 Coronado, while en-
camped at Hawaiku—sent his Lieutenant
Alvarado to the Indian village of Tiguex at
the invitation of their Governor, to prepare a
camp for winter quarters. The scene shows
the arrival of Coronado and his army, who
were received by the Indian Chief and pre-
sented with many gifts. The recently excavated
ruins of this same village may be seen across
the Rio Grande from Bernalillo, N. M.
