EDMONTON "OIL CAPITAL OF CANADA"
There are more than 7,000 producing oil wells within a
100 mile radius of Edmonton; and more than 10,000
miles of pipeline radiate from the refineries, providing
more than 70% of the nation's oil at a rate of more
than 600,000 barrels a day. This colossal oil boom began
on February 13th, 1947 when the Imperial Oil drilling rig,
shown here, struck oil at 5066 ft. on a farm near Leduc,
only 15 miles southwest of where it now greets visitors
entering Edmonton from the south. The other view
shows a modern day refinery at night.
