"Marshall may never be the town of
my youth, but it can be something full
and rich. We have wonderful arts
and crafts, and brilliant philosophers
who sit on the street and will be
glad to tell you about life. We have
that to share with folks. My vision is
that we will be able to create a town
that is not a T-shirt town, not an
amusement park, but where people
can come and see the goodness and
fullness of this place."
Joe Penland, Jr. is a Marshall, North Carolina
town alderman who initiated a project to focus
his town's identity and stimulate tourism.
