"Historically, from the non-Native
perspective, the sheep came with the
Spaniards in the 1600s. When you go
back to the traditional history, and
the mythology of the Navajo, the
sheep has always been here. With
the coming of the Spaniards, the
physical sheep came, but the spirit
of the sheep has always been here;
it's always been part of the culture
and who we are as people."
Alta Begay is part of Diné bi' íína', joining her
family and other Navajo women and supporters
as volunteers who work to revive sheep culture
to the Navajo people.
