CATACOMBS OF SAINT CALLISTUS.
Foremost undoubtedly among the subter-
ranean regions of Rome stand the Cata-
combs of S. Callistus, so called after the
Pope who in the 3rd Century had important
works carried on there. These Catacombs-
have been brought out of the oblivion in
which they had lain for many centuries, by
long labourious and patient study, accompa-
nied by accurately calculated borings of the
hill, enclosed between the far-famed Appian
way, the Ardeatine way which at either
side run close-by- and the Via delle Sette
Chiese (Way of the Seven Churches) which
here connects the two.
This is not the place for a description in
detail; however, it may not be amiss to touch
on some few of the more important chambers,
such as: the Chambers of the Sacraments
where on the walls are depicted symbolical
representations of the mysteries and cere-
monies believed and practised by the Catholic
Church from the beginning. The Crypt of
the Popes, recalling to the veneration of the
faithful the generous pontiffs who were buried
here, successors of S. Peter in martyrdom as
in authority. The Crypt of S. Cecilia where
the willing knee bends itself before the
tomb of that illustrious Virgin and heroic
Martyr, whose memory is engraven on the
hearts of men and whose brighter glory has
added a new lustre to the glory of her sires.
Entrance to the Catacombs of S.t Callistus
is at N 54 Via Appia Antica.
The monks act as guides to visitors, and
speak various languages.
These Catacombs are closed on Christmas
day, Easter day, the 15 of august and New
year's day.
The catacombs are open all the year on week days from
8,30 a. m. until 11,30 a. m. and from 1,30 p. m. till the
Ave Maria.
Priests who wish to say Mass in the catacombs should
give notice beforehand either by letter or by Telephone
