Elizabeth: "Thy name?"
Boy: "William, madam."
Elizabeth: "Ay, and thy other name?" (The
boy looks helplessly at his father.) "Well, well,
thy father's name?"
Boy: "John, madam."
Elizabeth (laughing outright): "John what?"
Boy: "Oh! Shakespeare, madam."
Elizabeth (taking the boy's head in her hands):
"William Shakespeare, I like thy name and
I like thy looks. (She kisses him.) There, tell
thy playmates the Queen kissed William
Shakespeare."
Boy: "Thank you, madam, and-and-"
Elizabeth: "Well!"
Boy: "If you please, may Willliam Shakespeare
kiss the Queen?"
Elizabeth (laughing): "Ay, truly."
(The boy throws his arms round the Queen's
neck and gives her a good hug. Then he
runs down to his father, who has been
terribly anxious, and tells him all about it.)
