New Mexico, called the "Sunshine State" because
of the numerous sunny days, and the "Plateau State."
because of the high altitude, is the oldest state in
the Union, as it was first seen by Spaniards in
1540, and the newest, being admitted in 1912.
With its area of 122,503 square miles, it is the
third largest state in the Union, but is one of the
smallest with only 400,000 inhabitants. Its abun-
dance of natural resources have scarcely been touched
as yet, and Government irrigation projects are rapidly
reclaiming the desert stretches. In short, New
Mexico is the last of the old West, as Americans
with their trains, automobiles and modern build-
ings, are found side by side with the Indians, native
Mexicans, and their burros, adobe houses and ancient
agricultural implements,
