Micklegate Bar is one of the most important of the four
"bars" which are such a prominent feature of York city
walls. It spans the London Road and consists of a plain,
round arch surmounted by a massive square tower with
battlemented bartizan turrets. On this bar were formerly
exhibited the heads of traitors, the list having included
Llewellyn and the Duke of York, father of Edward IV.
