York Minster takes first place amongst the Cathedrals
of England. A wooden Church occupied the site in 627,
and from then to 1080 when the present edifice was begun,
several churches were built and destroyed. The greater
part of the noble building of to-day was built during 1154
and 1474, the Cathedral being re-consecrated in 1472.
The total length is 519 feet, and the breadth of transept
223 feet. The Central Tower is 198 feet high, and 65 feet
square.
