Bootham Bar consists of a plain, round double-arch,
crowned by an Edwardian superstructure with bartizans
pierced with arrow slits. The "bars" are a famous
feature of York and form the means by which travellers
along the main roads through the county, gain access to
the city which is still surrounded by its ancient walls.
