The City Walls. The circuit of the walls of York
covers a distance of nearly three miles. With the Roman
wall for its foundation, the present fortification dates
from the reign of Edward III, but has suffered consider-
ably at various times from war and siege. Parts of the
defences were restored in 1833, when the walls were laid
