The letters F I stand for Ferdinand and
Isabella. The "conjugal yoke” connecting them
signifies that they were husband and wife. The
bunch of arrows denotes domination. The lamb
with the banner, sitting upon the book, is the
emblem of the Island of St. John the Baptist (the
name of the Island is properly ”St. John the
Baptist, of the Rich Port," shortened to Rich Port
or Puerto Rico). The meaning then is Ferdinand
and Isabella, husband and wife, conquered the
island of St. John the Baptist,
In the surrounding circle are the castles and
lions of the Spanish Kingdoms of Castile and Leon,
respectively, and the banners of Spain, The
original coat of arins was granted by King
Ferdinand in 1511. The seal was abandoned for
another in 1901 but by formal act of the island
legislature the old seal was re-instated in 1905
and is still the official seal,
