Visiting Congressional Committee Appointed to Arrange for the Tricentenary Celebration of the Settlement of Virginia. Just above the wharf at Jamestown, in the midst of Sycamore trees and a dense growth of vines, is all that remains of "the first church in America." No traces of the structure are to be found except the old, English-made brick tower, - a most interesting study, bearing evidence of having been used as a watch-tower. The constant crumbling of the earth along the shore threatens the stability of this picturesque landmark.
