This handsome house was built for William H.
Crosby in 1837 when Nantucket whaling was
reaching its greatest glory. Its great French
windows, twelve foot ceilings, silver door knobs,
lofty double parlours - their twin fireplaces em-
bellished with imported mantels - make it notable.
To these innovations the Crosbys added the star-
tling item of ice cream!!!!!! Since 1945 the house
has been owned and operated by Miss Mattie Emp son
as Nantucket's most charming eating place.
