RAILROAD STATION - BARSTOW, CALIFORNIA
From 1900 to after the first world war the railroad station
was of considerable importance to the communities they
served. In the west the Sante Fe not only improved their
service with faster trains and steel cars replaced the little
wooden ones but Fred Harvey built spacious dining rooms,
generally combined with a two story hotel at scheduled stops.
It was said that you never received a bad cup of coffee at a
Fred Harvey stop. The California Limited was the only Santa
Fe train to carry a dining car. The early railroads were given
huge land grants along their lines. To sell this land Zulu
trains were used to bring settlers west. When the Santa Fe
reached California the days of the land grants had passed
though the line did get some such grants in Colorado and
Kansas ... M.P.
