Down by the river the walls are composed
of black gneiss, slates and schists, all greatly im-
plicated and traversed by dikes of granite. This
is about 800 feet in thickness, then there is 800
feet of quartzites, then 500 feet of greenish sand-
stone, then 700 feet of bedded sandstone and
limestones--called alcove limestone,- above which
is 1600 feet of limestone, known as red-wall lime-
stone, then 800 feet of grey and red sandstone,
called banded sandstone and at the top 1000 feet
of Aubrey limestone. These are the elements with
which the walls are constructed, from black buttress
below to alabaster tower above.
