Additional Details:
Built in 1609, in the reign of Philip III of Spain, by Don Pedro de Peralta, Governor and Captain-General of the "Kingdom and Provinces of New Mexico". Besieged and abandoned during the Pueblo Rebellion of 1680, it was retaken by the Spaniards under De Vargas in 1692 and finally captured by General Stephen W. Kearney in 1845. Here Lew Wallace wrote much of his famous book "Ben Hur."
