The Palace of the Governors was built
in the reign of Philip III of Spain, by Don Pedro
de Peralta, Governor and Captain-General of the
"Kingdom and Provinces of New Mexico". Be
sieged and abandoned during the Pueblo Rebellion
of 1.680, it was retaken by the Spaniards under De
Vargas in 1692 and finally captured by Gen. Ste-
phen W. Kearney in 1845. Here Lew Wallace
wrote much of his famous book "Ben Hur".
