The directive radio beam is a series of dots and dashes broadcast continuously along the air way. When
the pilot hears the steady hum of dashes through his head set (see right) he knows he is following his
true course. The planes also have 2-way voice radio, enabling the pilot to talk to United Air Lines'
ground stations and with other planes in flight.
