Commenced in 1851, this famous Railroad tunnel was blasted through 4 3/4 miles of granite beneath the Hoosac Mountain Range near North Adams, Mass. Providing the first practical use of nitroglycerine, it was completed on November 27, 1873 at a cost of 195 lives. The two headings met with an error of only 9/16 of an inch.
