A fortress, built 1524-1531 on the orders of King Francis I. During a visit in 1516, he saw the island as an important location for defending the French coastline from sea-based attacks. It later became a prison, and is famous for being one of the settings of Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Count of Monte Cristo". If is the French word for the Yew tree. |
