Lower Gatun Lock, seven miles from the
Atlantic entrance to the canal. There are
three double locks at Gatun to allow the pas-
sage of vessels in both directions. Each set of
three will lift a vessel 85 feet, from the At-
lantic sea level to the level of Gatun Lake.
The locks are about one and one-third miles
long, of solid concrete, and form the largest
concrete structure in the world. About 2,000,-
000 yards of concrete will be used.
