OAKLAND, THE INDUSTRIAL CITY OF THE
WEST
Oakland, third largest city in California, lies
almost directly opposite to the Golden Gate clearly
visible some four miles distant. Lake Merritt, in
the foreground, is the only tidal lake in the heart
of an American city and is known all over the
world as a refuge for wild ducks. With its ocean-
going commerce, and terminals of several railronds,
Oakland has been described as the place "Where
Rail and Water Meet."
