SCHRAFFT'S
Alexandria Room
556 Fifth Avenue, New York
"My favorite Schrafft's is the Alexandria Room on the fourth
floor of the branch at 556 Fifth Avenue, near 46th Street.
Recently the room was done over and enriched by beautiful
chandeliers and other appointments. The charm remains in-
tact, offering restful dining at the end of a hard day.
Service is home type. There is no printed menu, but the
capable, courteous waitresses will tell you that, for a fixed
price of $3.75, you can have a choice of entrees. Roast prime
ribs of beef is always on. Others you might find are fresh
lobster thermidor, breast of chicken fricassee on Southern
spoon bread and calf's liver grill.
This Colonial dinner may begin with grapefruit supreme or
tomato bouillon, melba toast and the famous pulled bread,
celery, radishes and olives. As the main course is served,
the waitress offers different vegetables, also cheese muffins,
cinnamon buns and hard rolls. If you feel you haven't had
enough, she'll offer more. And so to one of the fancy desserts
like chocolate mocha chiffon pie or Schrafft's famous ice
cream with butterscotch sauce.
