The Statue of Liberty on Bedloe's
Island in New York Harbor was con-
ceived in 1865 by Edouard de Labou-
laye, the eminent French historian and
was designed and executed by Bartholdi,
the French sculptor. It was the gift of
the people of France to the people of
the United States.
