U.S. S. "OLYMPIA" AND ADMIRAL
DEWEY. The ship is a protected cruiser; launched
at San Francisco, Cal., Nov. 5, 1892; length 344 feet I
inch; breadth 53 feet; draught 21 feet 6 inches; displace-
ment 6,600 tons; speed 21.69 knots; 34 guns; 30 officers
and 428 men; and was the flagship of Admiral George
Dewey, (then Commodore) Commander-in-Chief of the
American forces at Manilla Bay, the glory whereof is
sufficient. In view of his world-wide fame, lengthy ref-
erence to Admiral Dewey seems unnecessary. Pride of
rank and every honor in their power were bestowed upon
him by the Congress of the United States and a grateful
people. With the single exception of Admiral Farragut,
under whom he received a part of his early training, Ad-
miral Dewey is the only one to hold the rank and title of
Admiral of the United States Navy.
