Jamestown Exposition, showing the Great Piers. The
immense water basin seen in the foreground has an area of
1,280,000 square feet and a depth of 10 feet at low tide: the
structure consists of two piers, 200 feet wide, extending out into
Hampton Roads for nearly half a mile. The basin is a safe
harbor for small craft, and here all kinds of water sports and
events take place. Launches and steamers leave the landings
for excursions to the fleet and about the outer harbor. The
effect at night, when illuminated by myriad incandescent lights
and monster search-lights, is spectacular, inspiring and unique.
