Bird's-Eye View of the Jamestown Exposition. The
Exposition celebrates the 300th anniversary of the beginning of
the Nation. In 1607 John Smith, with other adventurers, set up
a stockade on a peninsula of Powhatan's River (afterwards
called the James), and named the settlement James City or
Jamestown. From this grew Virginia and eventually, the
United States. The site of the Exposition is of great natural
beauty: it overlooks the historic waters of Hampton Roads, and
around it cluster the populous cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and
Newport News. In the foreground is the great water basin,
with piers extending out nearly one-half mile. To the right are
seen Old Point Comfort and Fortress Monroe.
