Named from the Latin word Septem,
meaning seven, as this was the seventh
month in the Roman calendar.
When Romulus and Remus were infants
they were said to have been thrown into the River Tiber by their
mythical mother Rhea; chance cast them ashore where they were
found and suckled by a wolf. Later they were raised and educated
by a herdsman. When Romulus grew into manhood he founded
Rome.
