Every spring, these Japanese cherry trees burst into bloom over night and the scene is one of entrancing beauty. Three thousand of these trees were planted along the waterfront of East and West Potomac park for a distance of four miles between the trees and stone wall a circuitous path wings its way to the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Arlington Cemetery. The trees, the gift of the Japanese Government, were accepted in 1912 on behalf of this country by the first lady of the land Mrs. William Howard Taft wife of President Taft. |
