BOOKER T. WASHINGTON, Educator and
Statesman. Born a slave in 1856, he graduated
from Hampton Institute, Va. in 1878. Called
to Alabama in 1881 to found the Tuskegee
Normal & Industrial Institute for Negroes,
which from a beginning of 30 pupils has now
grown to a world-famous college. His auto-
biography "Up From Slavery" has been trans-
lated into approximately 20 different lan-
guages. Buried on the campus of Tuskegee
Institute, where in 1921 a bronze monument
to his memory was unveiled. The U. S. Gov-
ernment selected him as one of the five Amer-
ican educators to be honored in the 35 Fa-
mous American Series of Commemorative Post-
age Stamps issued in 1940. The stamp is of
the ten cent denomination.
