THE SITE OF GEN. LEE'S FAREWELL
the hill north of the Appomattox River, in the woods on the
east side of the old stage road, and about one and a half miles
from the Court House. Here in a few words, after his surrender
to General Grant, General Lee told his bráve men to return
to their homes and become worthy citizens.
