ENDICOTT
PEAR TREE, DAN-
VERS, MASS. Captain John Endicott came to Salem
in September, 1628, with 100 mail-clad followers and a charter
from England. He was immediately appointed_Governor of
the Colony of Massachusetts Bay. Governor Endicott was
the first land owner in Danvers, 1630. On the Endicott (or
Orchard) farm with his own hands he planted this tree, said
to be the oldest fruit tree in New England. The tree is still
in life and has within a few years borne fruit. 244.
