JACKSON MONUMENT AND ST. LOUIS
CATHEDRAL.-The site on which the St.
Louis Cathedral stands was selected in 1718
by Bienville for a place of worship, in 1724 a
structure of brick was erected and known as
the parish church of St. Louis, it was de-
stroyed by fire in 1788, rebuilt in 1792 at a
cost of $50,000, again rebuilt in 1851.
