Additional Details:
This picture, taken in 1879 in front of the courthouse at Dodge City is one of members of Chief Dull Knife's band of Northern Cheyennes who were transferred from their reservation in Dakota to the Fort Reno, Indian Territory agency in 1877. In the fall of 1878 they left there, without permission, in an attempt to get back to their old home, and against great odds reached western Nebraska before United States troops captured them. In the encounter, about 45 settlers were killed, and these Indians were brought to Dodge City in February 1879 for trial.
