This great memorial to George Washington, the Mason, is situated on a hill west of Alexandria between the City of Washington and Mount Vernon. The imposing 250 foot high memorial will overlook to the north the City of Washington and to the south Mount Vernon his home, while to the east lies Alexandria, Virginia , which city he helped to plan. The unusual architectural features and the remarkably landscaped terraced approaches present a sticking apearance. It was modelled after the ancient towers which were used as beacons to guide mariners into harbor as exemplified in he beacon at Rhodes.
