THE SODIUM REACTOR EXPERIMENT (SRE)
Nestled in the Santa Susana Mountains near Los
Angeles is the SRE, an atomic power project to
help develop lower cost electricity from atomic
energy. Built and operated by Atomics Interna-
tional, a division of North American Aviation, Inc.,
for the Atomic Energy Commission, it is the first
non-military reactor to produce heat for the gen-
eration of electricity by a private utility.
