MARTYRS' SHRINE.
Fort Ste. Marie was the central residence of the
Jesuit missionaries who labored among the twenty
thousand Hurons inhabiting the Georgian Bay District
at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
Six of the eight Martyred Saints lived here and
the sacred remains of Brébeuf and Lalemant were
buried here after their heroic martyrdom by the
Iroquois in 1649.
The present church was built in 1926, one year
after their Beatification and four years before their
Canonization in 1930.
This venerable spot, the first centre of Christianity
and civilization in Ontario, is visited by about 100,000
pilgrims every year.
