FRAY MARCOS, SANTA FE HOTEL, WILLIAMS, ARIZONA.
Back:
PUBLISHED BY FRED HARVEY
FRAY MARCOS, the new station hotel at
Williams, is built with wide porticos like an
old Spanish mission. The construction is rein-
forced concrete. It is named after Fray Marcos
de Niza, who in 1539 led an expedition through
Arizona in search of the mythical gold. Wil-
liams is the gateway to the Grand Canyon,
which is 65 miles to the north. Close to the
town is Bill Williams Mountain, which rises
to a height of 9,000 feet, on the summit of
which is buried the historic pioneer scout,
Bill Williams, who was Fremont's guide.
