The First White Man to settle in this community. COUNCIL OAK in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Indiana. LaSalle passed this ancient tree in 1679 on his portage from the St. Joseph River to the Kan- kakee River. He came here again in 1681 to sign a treaty with the Miami Indians.
