The first ascent was made by M. Charles, in France, in
1783 The first balloon flight in England was made by an
Italian, a Signor Lunardi, a year later. In 1875, Messrs.
Blanchard and Jeffries successfully crossed the Channel
from Doyer to Calais in a balloon. Since those days,
balloons have been brought to a far higher state of
perfection, and in 1901, M. Berson and Dr. Suring ascended
to a height of 35,000 ft. from Berlin.
